Phonebox/Library/Defibrillator update

By   June 29, 2017

The Parish Council have been in contact with the Heartbeat Trust and hope to have the defibrillator pack installed early August. Once this has taken place they will arrange a training session in the hall for anyone interested and willing to give a couple of hours of their time. Hopefully this week be in the second week of August.

They haven’t been able to go ahead with the library because they want the two to be hand in hand and it will be easier to wait until the defibrillator equipment has been fitted so they can see how much room is left. A number of books have already been donated so we have an excellent start to the little library.

Access to a defibrillator in a emergency can be a real life saver. Sweden is testing drones to deliver defibrillators and claim it can be upto four times faster than an ambulance reports BBC Click.

Rain Rain Rain – and a record (or two)

By   June 28, 2017

You probably just thought it rained a lot yesterday.

Whether you were at home watching the roads turn to rivers or out and about you would have realised it was raining a lot.

The prediction was that a month’s rainfall would fall in one day.

By 10:00pm ITV reported that Santon Downham claimed the record as the wettest place in the country with 49.8m (~ 2″) of rain in 12 hours. (9am till 9pm)

We’d normally get 58mm in the whole month.

The rain didn’t stop overnight and by the morning the record had continued to grow.

ITV had to update the story as by then we’d had 78mm of rain (~3″) – more than for the whole of April and May.

We were popular on many websites including the Daily Star the EDP, BFP and the Newburgh Gazette

The Daily Star reported that it was our wettest day since records began in 1960!.

High-speed broadband is here!!

By   May 22, 2017

Screen Dump 763 May. 22 16.32BT switched on our high speed broadband today. (we weren’t quite the 1st in the village).

Speeds are good. Accessing via wifi we’re getting ~ 40mps. (This is about 8 times faster than we were getting)

Using a wired connection (direct into the router) it peaked at abut 56.4mps which is slightly better than BT quoted us.

At present BT are the only people offering the service.

Update 28/5/2017

Both PlusNet and TalkTalk are also offering the service. The speeds offered seem to vary by vendor.

A list of fibre suppliers (not necessarily offering a service here) can be found on the Openreach site:-

New Aircraft in the skies

By   April 20, 2017

If you’ve been watching the aircraft flying over recently you’ll have seen a few new unusual ones.

RAF Lakenheath sees six F-35As on deployment for training purposes (See EDP story for details)

Our photos don’t do them justice but they’re easy to recognise compared with the normal F15s and a LOT LOUDER!!!!!

Also visiting but for a shorter period are the even more expensive F22s

Woodworking at the SD Corral

By   April 13, 2017

If you’ve passed by the railway line recenlty you might have noticed work going on nearby. Construction has been going on to build what can only be described as a corral – supposedly for the cattle which sometimes live in the field between the railway and the river. It looks a substantial construction and has been accompanied by replacement/upgrades to the adjacent fencing.

Fibre Broadband Delay

By   March 25, 2017

If you’ve been following the “Fibre Journey” progress on the BT/Openreach site you’ll have seen being stuck on “Connect” for some time.

This implies it will be done within the next four months. However it’s been like that for 4/5 months at least.

A more accurate response has been sought from Openreach. :-

In response to your query regarding Fibre availability, we’ve investigated and found that you are connected to cabinet 12 and exchange BRANDON.

We are bringing fibre into your area.  There is a SEP (superfast extension programme) project ongoing for FTTC with an estimated completion date of End of September, 2017 which is subjected to change as per the amount of work left.

There are so many departments involved to give a fibre to a customer, which takes time and all the information that we provide is the combined information from different departments which is reflecting on our network records and tools.

We hope you understand that we have a real commitment to delivering superfast broadband to more and more customers. We appreciate your patience during this time.
