The 48th was selected to bomb Libyan targets with its F-111s during Operation Eldorado Canyon from 14 to 15 April 1986. The operation, aimed at reducing Libya's terrorist threat, was conducted with the U.S. Navy and involved a grueling non-stop, 14-hour flight to Libya and back. The 48th was also one of the lead units in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield and later flew over 2,500 combat missions during Desert Storm, destroying 920 Iraqi tanks and armored personnel carriers, 245 hardened aircraft shelters, 113 bunkers, and 160 bridges.
