According to Hey, gathering the harvest was the climax of the rural year - important to all villagers. Farmers would traditionally hold a supper or some other event to mark it but inceasingly resented the cost of what were often drunken affairs. Typically in the Victorian period this was often changed to monster teaparties with speeches. From the 1860s many parishes had a day of harvest thanksgiving with a special church service known as the harvest festival and this became the highlight of the harvest year
