Welcome
to the May '99 issue of the 22villages Newsletter. Its aim
will be to keep you informed of
how the heritage project is progressing, share advice, guidance and helpful
hints from other villages as well as forthcoming events. Because of the
nature of the project ALL events are open to everyone connected with the
project unless otherwise stated.
We
have arranged a trip to Bury Records Office http://www.suffolkcc.gov.uk/libraries_and_heritage/sro/
Wed 26/05/99 - 7.30pm to 9.30pm, 77 Raingate Street Bury St Edmunds IP33 2AR
This will be a chance to research your village with the guidance and help of
two experienced members of staff. There are a maximum of 25 places so
please book up through me (first come, first served basis).
There will be NO CHARGE but you may need some change for the photocopier
(40p per sheet).
If you have any particular questions you know of in advance please let Joe
have them ASAP.
We
have arranged for Mark Barnard, an Architectural Heritage
Expert with Suffolk County
Council, to visit Tuddenham on Wednesday 2nd June at 1pm, meeting up at The
White Hart and then walking around the village. He will be with us for a
couple of hours to provide expertise to help you create the Architectural
Heritage section of the 22 villages book. Unfortunately he is not available
out of office hours but I hope that some of you will be available,
as it is a lunchtime. Mark has asked if you could submit some of your
questions in advance (via Joe) in case he needs to do initial research.
Other villages welcome.
Come
along to Tuddenham village hall for our
first bi-monthly open meeting on Tuesday 15th June at 7.30pm.
This will be a chance to talk to the villagers involved in the pilot
project, who will be halfway through completing their chapter (gulp!). A
guest speaker with expertise on local heritage will give us a short talk and
members of the Forest Heath support team, including the co-ordinator Joe
Thompson will be onhand to answer questions. A computer will be showing the
Internet aspects of the project. So come along and learn more about what we
have let ourselves in for!
Anyone
in your village who knows about local wildlife or family history or
photography or good at writing? any skills or expertise that could be shared
with the 22villages community - in return for 21 other villages resources? I
was aiming to make the first draft of this directory available NEXT WEEK -
so please let me have your village's
contributions by then - Thanks.
For
those wishing to get more involved in the
internet aspect of the project - here is a summary of some
of the things you can do! Some may require extra software and this is
available Free of Charge from Joe (01379) 646046 along with any help and
advice you may need.
(1)
Connect to the internet (as you normally would)
Send
email to any village by
moving your mouse to the postbox when
the list of villages appears
choose one by clicking on it. A blank email form will start addressed to the
email contact of that village. Write your email and press [Send].
Visit
a village web site by moving your mouse to the signpost
when the list of villages appears
choose one by clicking on it. A new browser window will open and you can
then look around the village! Remember we are still at a very early stage so
only Tuddenham's site is started.
Post
an e-notice - "what's the difference between an email
message and an e-notice" you may cry. Well - rather like a
traditional notice placed on your 'real' village noticeboard, everyone can
read it and because of this it reaches a much wider community. Our
electronic notice board is readable by everyone with an interest in Heritage
- please visit it often and contribute! So ... click your mouse on the
noticeboard Outlook
Express (or your newsreader) will start and show you a list of notices and
their replies (called threads). If for example there is a notice from a
village asking for the loan of a metal detector and YOU have one you are
willing to lend simply click on the
button on the main toolbar, type your offer and press [Post] your response
will be added below the request and you will be contacted by the village
concerned. To post a new request click on the
button type your request and add a subject line and press [Post]
I
hope that this is of help and look forward to hearing your responses
Regards
Joe
